The project, dubbed Legacy Place, is still in the planning stages. Along with a mix of shops and boutiques, it will feature restaurants, the cinema, on-site parking and a gourmet grocery store, all set in a pedestrian-friendly atmosphere. "This is a trend in the marketplace," Robert Fraizer, vice president of development for SR Weiner, says of the lifestyle-center concept. The staple in California only recently made its way to Massachusetts with the opening last year of the Derby Street Shops, also developed by Weiner.
Next up, the Dedham project will go through the town's permitting process. Fraizer says once that is completed, however, construction should begin by the fall of 2006. And tenants are already lining up, Fraizer says. "There are already some letters of intent from several bigger tenants." He expects the project is expected to draw some big names in retailing, many of whom are tenants at Derby Street Shops.
The joint venture was the result of the pair's collaboration on a project in Millbury, MA that revitalized another aging National Amusements cinema. The project, says Fraizer, got the movie chain owner, which operates operating more than 1,425 screens in the US, UK, Latin America and Russia, thinking about its outdated headquarters and movie theater here. If all goes as planned, Legacy Place plans to open its doors in the fall of 2007.
