NEW YORK CITY-Babies "R" opened its Manhattan flagship in Union Square today. The 30,000-sf, multi-level site was converted from a Toys "R" Us site.
In December , the chain announced its plans for its first store here. At that time, a spokesperson said they "had been looking for a location in Manhattan for a while." "With more than 100,000 babies born in New York City each year, our Babies 'R' Us store will offer the largest selection of newborn and infant merchandise for all the families in the New York area," said Rick Markee, president of Babies "R" Us.
The store features a selection of juvenile products ranging from furniture, strollers, and car seats to infant care products and more. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by actor and talk-show host Tony Danza and nursery stylist Wendy Bellissimo.
In March, Vornado Realty Trust, Bain Capital and Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co. inked a deal to buy specialty toy and baby-product retailer Toys 'R' Us Inc. for approximately $6.6 billion. At that time, the Toys 'R' Us mix of properties includes domestic 681 toy stores and 601 toy stores in other countries, plus 218 Babies R Us, all of which are in this country.
