The center will contain two performance venues, a 250-seat recital hall and a 100-seat blackbox theater. The recital hall will accommodate performances ranging from soloists to large ensembles and the theater will be used for dramatic performances, including monologues and small experimental productions.
In addition to the performance venues, the facility will contain two exhibition galleries and several visual art display areas in conference rooms and lobbies. An estimated 3,500 sf of wall space and 3,100 sf of floor space will be devoted to the visual arts. There will also be a café and box office for the theater and recital hall where products by the students and faculty, such as CDs, videos and art related to productions, will be sold.
"This facility will bring two exciting new performance venues to the UArts campus and Philadelphia's Avenue of the Arts," said university president Miguel Angel Corzo in a statement. "This space is unique to the city and region and will provide audiences with a remarkable combination of talent, performance quality and outstanding views." Saba Rodriguez, director for major gifts and planned giving, tells GlobeSt.com additional funding is being sought among "friends close to the school," foundations, corporations, private donors and the state. She anticipates raising the balance by spring 2006. The project will then go out to bid.
UArts was founded more than 125 years ago and describes itself as the nation's first and only university dedicated to the visual, performing and communication arts. The Skyline Center is designed to create synergy among the three divisions. Currently, 2,300 students are enrolled in UArts undergraduate and graduate programs at the Avenue of the Arts campus.
