BOSTON-Sen. Edward M. Kennedy and his family have pledged $1 million to an endowment fund to help build a greenway in downtown Boston that will be named for his mother. The contribution will be added to the $5.3 million already pledged to build the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway along a swatch of land that was formerly part of the elevated Southeast Expressway.
Proponents of the greenway said they are seeking a total of $50 million for the project. Under the group's bylaws, the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority planned to match the first $5 million raised by the group, known as the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy.
A large portion of the money that has been already raised has come from individuals or firms closely associated with the project, including Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Raytheon Co. and State Street Corp., which each contributed $1 million to the fund. Other members of the Kennedy family, including Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg and Maria Shriver and her husband, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, plan to hold fundraising events for the project next year, according to Kennedy.
