Museum officials says the expansion and renovation work, which should be completed by the end of 2007, will also raise the grade of the land surrounding the warehouse complex and create a new central entrance. The project will expand the museum's KidStage, which will be moved from the fourth to the first floor, and an existing exhibit called Construction Zone will be rebuilt inside a new building. The museum's landmark giant milk bottle located outside the building will remain unchanged.
The museum joins a number of other cultural institutions here that will be upgrading their facilities in the next few years. Among them will be the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Science, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and the Institute of Contemporary Art.
