The patio would have been one of the largest in Boston, spanning the length of the entire building and capable of holding up to 440 patrons. The improvements to the building would have allowed the Fenway watering hole to increase its occupancy from 400 to about 1,200 patrons. The board has approved permits to enlarge a dining and function room that will increase the bar's capacity to nearly 800 patrons along with an outdoor seating area for 106.

"I think right now, the board just wasn't ready to approve a rooftop patio at that location," says Pokaski. He adds that the board also recently received a letter from condo owners living near the bar who expressed noise and other concerns over the patio. "They felt it was too much, too soon and could cause problems." The permit request was withdrawn by the bar's owners without explanation, Pokaski says. Dana Van Fleet, one of the Cask 'n Flagon's owners, could not be reached by GlobeSt.com for comment. The site has been across from Fenway Park for more than 35 years.
