Jonathan A. Schein - President & CEO - Real Estate Media - GlobeSt.com1/24/06: Ford has dubbed its new strategy to rebound from its fiscal woes Way Forward. Perhaps a more fitting name might be Way Off, or Way Out. Edsel would also be appropriate. Yes, Ford is taking some action by reducing line and management staff, cutting production capacity, shaking up the corporate culture and a few other so-called hot talking points. But, like many of the old-line manufacturing companies, it seems that Ford just doesn't get it. To make the point, the company is not cutting a single brand line in its entire portfolio. What good is making fewer cars with fewer employees if nobody is going to purchase the existing stock? The latest five-year plan, in reality, is still short-term balance-sheet engineering without much attention to the existing product line. Until it gets its priorities straight, Ford is going to earn a grade similar to its ticker symbol—F.
