PLAINVILLE, MA-Lowe's Home Improvement Centers has won the approval from town officials to build a 116,000-sf home improvement center at the junction of Routes 1 and 495. Amy Love, planning director for Plainville, tells GlobeSt.com that the home improvement chain has been permitted to build on a site near the Plainville Racecourse and is expected to break ground this spring.

A spokeswoman for Lowe's Home Improvement Centers, however, tells GlobeSt.com that the firm, which plans to develop 150 stores nationwide this year as part of a major expansion push, has not yet closed on the land so they could not comment on it. She says the firm is evaluating several new locations.

Plainville, located about 40 miles southwest of Boston, has been targeted by retail developers because of its location along Routes 1 and 495. A Target store recently opened and several other retail development projects are planned for the area.

Love says outdoor retailer Cabela's has also inquired about building a $50-million complex near the same junction that would include a 180,000-sf retail store along with a hotel and restaurant. The outdoor outfitter recently faxed a letter to Plainville's town administrator asking about tax incentives that would be available for the project, Love says. Cabela's did not return calls from GlobeSt.com seeking comment.
