MATTAPAN, MA-The Boston Redevelopment Authority has approved a $150-million project that will add 500 new housing units and create jobs here. Construction on the mixed-use, mixed-income Olmstead Green will begin this spring on a 35-acre site that once housed Boston State Hospital.

Developed by Lena Park Community Development Corp. in a joint venture with New Boston Development Partners LLC, the project will create energy-efficient, affordable workforce housing along with additional affordable rental units and senior housing in an urban campus atmosphere. Plans for the site also call for the development of an athletic and recreational facility, accommodations for individuals with mental illness, the expansion of Lena Park and the creation of an urban farm.

The project, which will incorporate childcare, job training and social services, also is designed to create jobs for residents of the area. Approximately 400 construction jobs and 400 permanent positions are expected to be created through the project.
