Executive Watch

Perspective

Jonathan A. Schein - President & CEO - Real Estate Media - GlobeSt.com1/31/06: Though I am a life-long capitalist, I'm amused how often corporate interests trump American ideals. Internet darling and media mega-company Google has just struck a deal to provide its renowned search function on the Chinese Internet. However, to do the deal, Google agreed to the censorship rules dictated by the Chinese Government, trading in some of its original Silicon Valley hipster irreverence in the name of market penetration. Yes, China will become the world's most important marketplace in the next 50 years. However, deals such as this can only cut into the very character of Google and prolong the Faustian bargain required to do business in the world's most populous country. It forces one to ask: How much in the long run is global market penetration worth?
