COMMERCE CITY, CO-M.A. Mortenson Co. recently started construction of the 90,000-sf, $23.8-million Commerce City Civic Center in the Prairie Gateway development. The center is scheduled to open in second quarter 2007.
Denver-based RNL is providing the architecture, interior design, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, landscaping and master-planning services for the project, which is being constructed as an environmentally friendly building. Already registered with the US Green Buildings Council, the project is expected, at the minimum, to qualify for a LEED Silver certification.
The building backs up to the former Rocky Mountain Arsenal, now a wildlife preserve with a planned visitor's center to the north. The civic center will be long and low, built with a combination of materials to represent the weaving of nature and New Urbanism. The materials will include zinc metal panels and stone, manufactured with sand, lime and calcium that are compressed to simulate the natural process of creating stone. The energy-efficient design, like all "green buildings," will include an under-floor air distribution system, allowing for adjustment of temperature controls in individual areas.
