Menino made the announcement at the annual meeting of the Boston Municipal Research Bureau. He said the tower would show confidence in the city and be ''a stunning statement of our belief in Boston's bright future."
A spokeswoman for the Boston Redevelopment Authority says the announcement is expected to generate proposals from around the world. If constructed, the building would tower over the city's skyline, rising above the city's current tallest building-the 62-story, 790-foot John Hancock Tower in the Back Bay.
