HAMPTON, GA-Facing a two-year backlog of residential rezoning applications on 813 lots, elected officials in this southside Atlanta community have passed a 120-day moratorium. The freeze is intended to give the city council time to update out-date zoning regulations, area brokers tell GlobeSt.com.
The council voted five to one in favor of passing the moratorium. However, officials rejected a suggestion that the moratorium also cover rezoning applications already being processed, city staffers report. Hampton has an estimated permanent population of 5,000 and is about 27 miles south of Downtown Atlanta, directly in the path of new commercial and residential growth.
The Henry County Council for Quality Growth, whose membership includes many of the county's most prominent builders and developers, worked with the city to set up the moratorium. The council last week changed its mind and agreed that developers, builders and individuals in the real estate business could sit on the city's planning board.
Steve Cash is executive director of the Council for Quality Growth. Ronnie Huggins, a former University of Georgia football star and currently a developer and real estate investor, is also a member of Cash's group.
