The company has opened 66 units since 1993 and was founded in 1987 with a store in Cleveland, MS. About one-fourth of the chain's restaurants are company owned, while the remainder are franchise operated.

Back Yard Burgers' sales for the full year in 2005 were $140 million, up from $113 million the previous year. Bur during the company's fourth quarter, which ended Dec. 31, it posted a net loss of $639,000. Year-over-year same-store sales at company-owned units were up 0.2%, but fell 1.2% at franchised locations.

Last month Michael Myers, the company's president and chief operating officer resigned. Chairman Lattimore Michael is also serving as chief executive officer, until the company fills the post of president/chief executive officer, for which a search is now underway.

Back Yard Burgers' menu features hamburgers that are said to be made with Black Angus beef, as well as chicken sandwiches, salads and other items. The chain specializes in charbroiled food.
