The Ritz-Carlton Sanya will be located on the southern tip of Hainan Island, an area known for its temperate weather, hot springs, tropical forests and beaches. The area also includes four golf courses, one of which hosted the 2006 European tour.

The U-shaped development will include rooms, suites and private villas with views of Yalong Bay. Amenities will include a 30,000-sf full-service spa, swimming pools, tennis, a wedding chapel and meeting facilities. Completion is scheduled for 2008.

The property will be Ritz-Carlton's first resort and seventh hotel operating agreement in China. Already up and running are properties in Hong Kong and Shanghai. Five others are under development in Hong Kong, Beijing and Guangzhou and will open between 2006 and 2009.

Ritz-Carlton currently operates 61 hotels around the world and has secured operating agreements for 20 more that are in the pipeline. Over the next year, three additional Ritz-Carlton-run hotels will open in Beijing (2) and Moscow, Ireland.
