Perspective
There comes a point when commercial enterprise can overstep its bounds. I am a lifelong capitalist, but even I find it difficult to reconcile when consumerism is wrapped in the veil of public service. I'm thinking of Simon Property Group's creating a book club for children. The club, called Kidgets, ostensibly supports children's literacy. Part of the idea is to get thousands of children to the mall to hear a reading of a book entitled, "Adventures in the Park" and featuring characters "developed by Simon Brand Ventures," as the cover proclaims. On face value, this seems like a wonderful community-based idea. However, how are these children getting to the mall? Most likely with parents or guardians who have loads of disposable income to spend once inside the shopping arcades. It might be better for Simon to promote children's literacy by possibly funding a local library—preferably separate from the mall property.
