NEWTON, MA-A local developer has broken ground on a 180-unit apartment complex on the site of a former commuter parking lot at the Woodland MBTA station. It is the first transit-oriented housing project in the western suburbs.
Ted Tye, managing partner for National Development, which is building Arborpoint at Woodland Station, tells GlobeSt.com that the groundbreaking culminates nine years of collaboration between the developer and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, MassHousing and the City of Newton. "Our vision for Arborpoint at Woodland Station was to create a residential community that meets demand in the area for high quality rental housing and will become the benchmark for future smart-growth and transit-oriented developments."
Built on a seven-acre site that once served as a parking lot for commuters, the project features a mix of two-story townhomes and single-level apartments, all within walking distance to the MBTA's Green Line service. As an added feature, Tye says residents also will have on-site access to a service which rents vehicles by the hour.
Construction should be completed by the summer of 2007. The project, which also entailed the construction of a new 548-car commuter parking garage, is the second transit-oriented project in Massachusetts for National Development. The company also is building a $500-million, one-million-sf mixed development known as Station Landing around the MBTA Orange Line at Wellington Circle in Medford. The Station Landing project, which is set to open in the next few weeks, includes 650 units of housing and 165,000 sf of retail space along with an office component and hotel. It will take five to six years to complete.
