A company source tells GlobeSt.com that the company is applying for its master use permit to construct three new lab buildings, an office building, a facilities building and a new warehouse. Construction is expected to take four years to complete.

Amgen acquired the Pier 89 property when it acquired Immunex in 2002. The source says Immunex had buildings under construction at the site when it was acquired, and Amgen took the ball and ran with it. The property is currently home to 750,000 sf of office and lab space.

About 300,000 sf of empty warehouse space at the site will be torn down to make way for the new space. The new buildings will be 65 feet tall, which for a lab building would be three stories. The cost of the development was not immediately available.

Amgen currently has 750 employees at the site. Another 150 jobs will be created this year and, by the time the expansion is complete, employment on the campus could be twice the current figure.

The company announced plans for a major expansion of its manufacturing and R&D operations in late January. In Cork, Ireland, for example, the Amgen intends to invest more than $1 billion in new process development, bulk manufacturing and fill and finish facilities that will put its products closer to patients in Europe. The company also is developing additional manfucaturing facilities in Puerto Rico and Rhode Island, and is acquiring Abgenix, a biopharma company with a large manufacuting facility in Fremont, CA.
