Ralph's president Dave Hirz said in a prepared statement that the sale of the stores is a "difficult, but necessary, step toward making Ralphs more competitive." A company official declined to explain the statement.

Delano tells GlobeSt.com the largest store is around 23,000 sf and the smallest store is right at 9,000 sf, which are quite small compared to most current operating models. "They are more like the stores of before, and they are in very good shape," he says. "I absolutely love San Francisco and these stores, and I have sons old enough to take care of the hard stuff."

Kroger operates 2,507 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 31 states under a dozen brand names. There were reportedly 20 stores in the package originally offered for sale by Kroger. The 12 locations involved in the would-be transaction with Delano are as follows:
