Although the designation applies to the block of Downtown Crossing buildings bounded by Washington, Franklin, Hawley and Summer streets, only the facades of the main Filenes building and a former glass and china store on the opposite corner must be retained. Two buildings adjacent to the Filenes site which were built in 1951 and 1973 are expected to be demolished and replaced by a tower, according to discussions between the potential new owner and the Boston Redevelopment Authority.

Vornado is expected to close on the property in the next few weeks. The site is currently owned by Federated Department Stores, which acquired the building during its merger last year with May Department Stores. Vornado did not return calls from GlobeSt.com seeking comment.
