BOSTON-Developers have broken ground on a 42-acre site in Mattapan that will be the city's first work force housing. Known as Olmstead Green, the $150-million project--which is being developed on the site of the former Boston State Hospital by Lena Park Community Development Corp. in a joint venture with New Boston Development Partners LLC--will create 500 units of energy-efficient, affordable housing.
There will also be rental units and senior housing on one central campus. Plans for the project also call for a health and fitness facility, the creation of an urban farm and accommodations for individuals with mental illness. The project was designed to create jobs and mesh housing with social services and childcare needs in one single community.
"Olmsted Green is one of those rare developments that will result in transformative changes," Mayor Thomas M. Menino says in a statement. "Olmsted Green promises a wealth of new housing opportunities for everyone from young to old, and financially secure to needy." Along with housing, the project is expected to create 400 permanent jobs for area residents.
