BOSTON-The Boston Redevelopment Authority has approved a proposal that will allow a local developer to use the air rights above South Station for a mixed-use project that would span an area between the train and bus stations. Plans for the project, which will be developed by Hines and TUDC LLC, call for the construction of two office buildings--including a 40-story tower--a 200-room hotel and up to 195,000 sf of residential housing. There will also be $40 million in privately funded improvements to South Station.
"This project uses an innovative approach to combine the creation of new space with one of Boston's most important transportation assets," Mayor Thomas M. Menino says in a statement announcing the BRA's decision. "We're talking about putting offices, homes, and hotel rooms literally right on top of public transit."
The project still must receive permitting approval from the city's Zoning Commission, which is scheduled to take up the topic next month. The developer did not return calls from GlobeSt.com in time for deadline.
