NEWBURGH, NY-PetSmart is the latest retailer to join the tenant roster at the Newburgh Plaza shopping center here. The Phoenix-based retailer has signed a lease for 20,000 sf of space, according to property owner Garden Commercial Properties of Short Hills, NJ.

Joseph Korn, vice president of development for Garden Commercial Properties, says PetSmart will occupy a new freestanding building at the 248,000-sf open-air center. The site will be part of the second retail phase at Newburgh Plaza which is located on Route 300 and Old Little Britain Road and totals 32 acres.

"The signing of PetSmart signifies another significant step in the redevelopment of Newburgh Plaza," Korn says. "The prominent chain follows in the footsteps of Kohl's Department Stores as national retailers who have identified this center as a prime shopping destination for residents throughout the Hudson Valley and beyond."

In February, Kohl's signed a lease for 89,000 sf to occupy a freestanding building that will replace the former Lloyd's department store at the property, which had sat vacant for almost a decade. Garden Commercial officials say that construction on the new Kohl's building has already begun and previously projected an opening for the retailer by this October. No construction start date on the new PetSmart location was released. The other major tenant at Newburgh Plaza is Home Depot.
