EBay acquired the 47-acre property from Novell Networks three years ago for about $100 million. As part of the deal, the company acquired an adjacent 15.75-acre parcel from the city (which acquired it from Novell) along with rights to expand the campus by about 1.5 million sf. Prior to the transactions, eBay reportedly had been considering moving its headquarters outside the city. Neither eBay spokesman Hani Durzy nor Nancy Klein with the City of San Jose could be reached Monday for comment.
All told, eBay can expand the campus to two million sf of office space plus six parking garages. In addition to the 200,000-sf office building, which is valued at $25 million, eBay has near-term plans to also add two parking garages and an additional 135,000-sf office building, according to public documents.
In addition to the online auction site, eBay owns PayPal and Skype. In 2005, eBay's employee base grew by more than 30% to about 10,500 while its net income grew 39% to $1.082 billion. The first quarter of 2006 continued the trend, with revenue up 35% and its GAAP net income ($248.3 million/$0.17 per share) exceeding the high end of its guidance.
