BOSTON-The Back Bay Architectural Commission has given Apple Computer conditional approval to demolish a Boylston Street building provided the company presents a building design that will better fit the neighborhood's architecture. For previous coverage, click here.

Apple, which plans to raze a 16,587-sf building at 815 Boylston St. across from the Prudential Center, wants to build a three-story, 22,116-sf structure on the site that will be home to its flagship store here. The Architectural Commission, which has approval over the exterior façade within certain areas of the Back Bay, agreed to form a subcommittee to work with Apple on its design plans, a city official says.

Apple's current design calls for a recessed entrance, an interior spiral staircase and a skylight with a green roof. The computer maker also wants to suspend its white apple logo, which it will illuminate during operating hours, in the middle of the building's exterior. The building's design still needs full approval from the commission. Apple officials could not be reached for further comment in time for GlobeSt.com's deadline.
