MALTA, NY-Thanks to an incentive package that will approach about $1 billion, Advanced Micro Devices of Sunnyvale, CA will build a more than $3 billion semiconductor manufacturing plant in Saratoga County. The firm will begin construction on the 1.2-million-sf facility at the Luther Forest Technology Park next July.

Construction will continue until July 2009. The plant will be fully operational sometime between January 2012 and January 2014.

State officials say that the plant will cost approximately $600 million to construct and contain about $2.6 billion in equipment that will produce 300 mm wafers. Based on estimates of another $2 billion in expenditures that will be made during the first two years of the plant's operation, state officials put total investment in the venture at $5.2 billion.

The state incentive package, which could approach $1 billion, includes a $500-million capital grant to defray the cost of the facility and equipment. New York State will also make available to AMD a $150-million research and development grant to help develop new microprocessor technologies for use at the facility, in collaboration with IBM in East Fishkill and the Center of Excellence in Nanoelectronics at the University at Albany. It is also expected that AMD will be eligible for benefits under New York's Empire Zones Program.

"This agreement sends a loud and clear message both nationally and internationally that the Empire State is in the forefront of the global high-tech economy," Governor George Pataki says. "AMD is a worldwide industry leader and we're proud that they want to partner with us on this unprecedented investment bringing over 1,200 high-tech jobs to Upstate."

AMD chairman of the board and CEO Hector Ruiz says, "AMD's ability to serve market demand for our industry-leading technology depends on an intelligent, flexible way to scale our manufacturing capacity. With a growing customer base, and the hope for a truly fair and open competitive playing field, our prospects for continued momentum over the long term look strong." State officials estimate that the plant will create thousands of construction jobs as well as more than 1,200 high-tech jobs and more than 3,000 in-direct positions once the plant is online.
