"We are excited to have Gilbane as our partner to complete our world-class arena," says Jeff Vanderbeek, the Devils' chairman and managing partner. "We really feel that we finally have a true partner in this project."

Gilbane takes over the construction management role as the 17,500-seat, 850,000-sf arena passes the 25% mark en route to completion by the start of the 2007-2008 season. The Devils currently call Continental Airlines Arena in the Meadowlands home. During the month-long period between construction managers, the Springfield-based Wm. Blanchard Co. temporarily supervised ongoing work on the site.

The UK-based Bovis Lend Lease and the Arizona-based Hunt Construction had teamed up to get the project going with an eye on the permanent construction management role, but couldn't come to a cost agreement. Such an agreement is still to be reached between the Devils and Gilbane, and the projected number for actual construction costs is said to be in the $200-million range. The City of Newark has committed $210 million toward the total projected cost of $350 million, which includes site work, acquisition and related expenses.
