What remains of the former four-story townhouse is a 20 x 100-ft lot at 34 E. 62nd St., between Park and Madison avenues. As GlobeSt.com reported, It's said that Bartha was despondent because he was facing a divorce and $4 million lien in a legal wrangle with his wife. A total of 15 people were injured--five civilians and 10 firefighters.

Investigators concluded that the doctor had created some sort of gas leak in the building and added ignition to it. The neighborhood, a tony Upper East Side area that the 2000 Census puts the median home price at $1 million, was shaken by the event. The Doctor died in the hospital from his injuries a few days following the blast.
