NEPTUNE, NJ-United Methodist Homes of NJ has unveiled plans for a 130,000-sf assisted-living complex with a capacity of 180 residents. Pending a variety of governmental approvals, the locally based group hopes to break ground in about two years.

The new facility would replace the existing Francis Asbury Manor, a 100,000-sf, 145-resident assisted-living complex constructed in 1947. The new construction would retain the Francis Asbury Manor name, and would be built adjacent to the existing building. The latter would be demolished in stages as the new construction proceeds, according to James C. Batten, president of UMHNJ.

According to plans unveiled by the group, which officials term "past the concept stage but still a work in progress," one building would rise seven stories. The other would top out at six stories, stepping down to three along the site's Stockton Avenue frontage. The existing complex is six stories tall. About half of the 180 new units would be apartments for independent seniors, while the rest would be units reserved for special-care residents.
