Renovation to the resort, located at 2727 W. Club Dr., will begin in June 2007. According to an Omni Hotels' spokeswoman, the renovation was prompted, in part, by growing demand for guest rooms and growing interest in the area as a get-away spot for business and leisure. "The desert has become a great resort destination for people around the US," she tells GlobeSt.com. "There are many great resorts in Phoenix and Tucson and we wanted to be competitive."

The first step of the cap-ex plan came in early 2006 when Omni opened a second golf course, the 18-hole Sonoran Course, designed by 2006 Ryder Cup Captain Tom Lehman. At the time, Lehman also redesigned two holes on the Catalina Course, the resort's other golf course.

Another important reason for the upgrade is because the property is the only one in Arizona owned by the Irving, TX-based Omni Hotels. The company acquired the property in the early 1990s. "Tucson is a special destination to us and we felt there were things around there we could improve on," the spokeswoman says. She adds that marketing is in the works to support the renovation, but couldn't comment on whether a name change or re-branding was being considered.

Zebrowski Design Group of Culver City, CA is the designer on the project. A general contractor has not been selected.
