NORTH BERGEN, NJ-National Wholesale Liquidators has signed on at Tonnelle Plaza, taking 60,727 sf at the Hartz Mountain Industries-owned shopping center. The West Hempstead, NY-based NWL will anchor the 200,000-sf, two-level strip center, which is on the verge of a major renovation program. The location marks NWL's second in Hudson County and eighth in New Jersey.

Terms of the signing were not released. Available space in the shopping center is currently listed with an asking price "upon request," for a five-year term.

The coming renovation, slated to begin early next year, includes an overhaul of the tenant mix and some cosmetic improvements, according to Hartz officials. Among the latter will be a new facade featuring numerous height variations, decorative brick bases and columns, new signage and a dressed-up parking area.

"We are now entering a new generation of consumers, and our retail locations need to reflect that," says Emanuel Stern, Hartz's president and COO. "The addition of NWL is an important part of Tonnelle Plaza's make-up and is a significant step in the evolution of its retail component."

"The North Bergen retail market has been coming back to life recently because of the demographics and the opening of some major big-box retail chains," says Jerry Welkis, president of Welco Realty Inc., exclusive leasing agent for the property.

Besides the incoming NWL, the shopping center's current tenants include Marty's Shoes, Petland, Rainbow Shops, Chuck E. Cheese, McDonald's, Chase Bank and Nextel, among others.
