BOSTON-The American Cancer Society plans to build a $25-million residential building to provide living quarters for out-of-town cancer patients who are undergoing treatment at area hospitals. The 50,000-sf project, comprised of 40 suites with shared kitchen and dining facilities, will be available free to patients once the project at 125 South Huntington Ave. in Jamaica Plain is completed in the spring of 2008, officials from the Cancer Society say.
AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals donated $7 million to the project with an additional $2.5 million funded by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and $2 million each coming from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. The Cancer Society will raise another $5 million to help build the facility, which will be named the AstraZeneca Hope Lodge Center after the pharmaceutical firm.
The facility, one of 23 Hope Lodges operated in the US, will feature a library, entertainment room, and a Quality of Life Center which will provide support, counseling and transportation services to residents.
