The development site is in the 1,270-acre Westover Hills at Texas 151 and Westover Hills Drive. Microsoft's plan is to build a data center for its Windows Live operation, adding a minimum of 75 jobs. Microsoft has a similar data center under construction on 74 acres in Quincy, WA.
Tom Freeman, senior vice president with Jones, Lang, LaSalle, tells GlobeSt.com that the Redmond, WA-based Microsoft considered every major city in the US as well as others in Europe and Asia during the yearlong search. "San Antonio stacked up economically and qualitatively as well," says Microsoft's broker.
Marty Wender, principal of Westover Hills, sold the land to Microsoft and will be the developer. Completion is slated for early spring 2008. Dallas-based Turner Construction Co. is the general contractor.
San Antonio City Council yesterday approved a 10-year property tax abatement on a 10-to-1 vote. The incentive package also includes $5.2 million in reduced utility costs from CPS Energy.
