BILOXI, MS-Isle of Capri Casinos Inc. is ready to begin repairs to the Biloxi Casino Resort. The casino, originally on barges destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, will be rebuilt on land to the tune of $185 million. The casino is temporarily housed in 45,000 sf of convention space in the resort's 731-room hotel.

A spokeswoman for the St. Louis-headquartered Isle of Capri says the company took advantage of a law passed in Mississippi in the wake of the hurricane to allow casinos to be built on land up to 800 feet from the shoreline. "We were the first casino to re-open on land," she tells GlobeSt.com. The renovation will restore the convention space at 151 Beach Blvd. to its former use.

The construction project doesn't have a start or completion date as yet, but will include a 2,100-slot machine casino, 50 table games, new poker room and upgrades to Farradday's Steakhouse. Also on tap are expansions to the existing buffet plus a to-be-announced new restaurant. The casino also will get a brand-new entrance.
