EVANSVILLE, IN-Berry Plastics Corp. says it is going to build a 600,000-sf distribution center here by 2010. The plastics packaging company, which employs about 1,200 people in the city, is set to begin construction on the new $20-million facility soon on a leased site near the Evansville Airport.

The new site will also have the potential for an additional 200,000 sf of either light manufacturing or added distribution capabilities, according to a statement by the Indiana Economic Development Corp. Berry also plans on spending more than $23 million on capital investment to its current operations in the city, the state economic corporation said. "This expansion will give us the infrastructure we need to move our products to our customers faster and more efficiently," said Bob Smith, Berry's director of warehousing and product logistics, in the IEDC statement.

Officials from the IEDC could not be reached in time for this story. The group says it is giving Berry $500,000 in tax credits and $100,000 in infrastructure grants to encourage the new development. The company is making its second expansion in two years in the community. In 2005, the company expanded its existing facilities with a 170,000-sf addition and added 64 jobs, says IEDC officials.
