Trenton—A new bill introduced in the State Senate would require all new state-owned buildings to be designed to meet national green building performance standards. Sponsored by Sen. Fred Madden (D-Gloucester), bill S843 had at presstime been approved by the Senate Economic Growth Committee and was on its way to the body's Budget and Appropriations Committee for consideration.

Broadly speaking, the legislation would require any state building of 15,000 sf or larger to be constructed and managed to LEED standards relating to sustainable site planning, water quality and efficiency, energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality and materials and resources.

"This legislation would allow the State of New Jersey to set an example for everyone within the state," Madden says.
