CARLSBAD, CA-The Irvine-based R.D. Olson Construction Co. has started construction on the $10.5-million fifth phase of the La Costa Glen seniors development, which will add 52 villas and garden homes to the project and is scheduled to be completed by January. The development site is across the lagoon from the Four Seasons Resort and just south of the La Costa Resort and Spa.

The project, a development of Continuing Life Communities, will maintain a surrounding 200-acre nature preserve. The latest phase, designed by architects KTGY Group of Irvine, is on a site minutes from the Pacific Ocean.

R.D. Olson was also the contractor on a previous phase of the development by Carlsbad-based Continuing Life Communities, which develops and operates continuing care retirement communities throughout California. R.D. Olson president Joe Kilar notes that the latest phase calls for 21 separate buildings consistent in style with its surrounding community.

The new villas and garden homes will be arranged in duplex and triplex configurations, with each home ranging from two to three bedrooms and 1,600 sf to 2,000 sf. Each unit will include a full kitchen, a living room, a laundry room, a dining area and a patio. Villas will have attached garages, while owners of garden homes will have access to detached garage buildings.

La Costa Glen is an age-restricted community where residents pay a one-time entrance fee and monthly maintenance fees. In addition to their home, residents are offered meals, health care services, general living assistance and other amenities.

Continuing Life has been developing its retirement communities since 1991, when it opened a community called Morningside of Fullerton. In addition to La Costa Glen, its developments include University Village Thousand Oaks in Los Angeles County.
