"This summer marks the return of Asbury Park as a cultural, dining, shopping and beach recreation," says Gary Mottola, Madison Marquette's president. "The improvements are a fundamental part of making Asbury Park a destination."

Already nearing completion as part of the larger Oceanfront Asbury redevelopment is the rehabilitation of the 1,500-seat, 1930s Paramount Theatre, which anchors the northern end of the stretch of boardwalk covered by the agreement. Also in place is a new restaurant, Salt Water Beach Café, in the landmark former Howard Johnson's building. Restaurateur Gabe Marabella is behind the new eatery.

The boardwalk redo also involves rehabilitation of Convention Hall, the Casino Building, and several oceanfront pavilions, as well as landscaping and physical appearance improvements. Plans also call for a plaza with seating in front of the Paramount Theatre, and a passageway has been opened through the Casino Building for access to the boardwalk.

With the announcement of Experience Asbury, Madison Marquette has also unveiled a list of retail tenants, part of the larger leasing effort, that will eventually be positioned at boardwalk locations. They include Hot Sand, a glass-blowing artisan; Brielle Cyclery; Cabana Club, an entertainment venue; Casa Di Formaggio, a sandwich shop; and the Beach Bar.

"These additions are just the beginning of our effort to repopulate the oceanfront with new dining and retail offerings," Mottola says.

Carrying an estimated price tag of $1.25 billion, the larger 56-acre redevelopment plan calls for about 500,000 sf of commercial space. Also part of the plan are about 3,200 new residential units involving several buildings and multiple developers
