Newport Beach-based The Irvine Co. has brought on board acclaimed architect Henry N. Cobb, co-founder of New York-based Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, to design a new 480-foot structure in San Diego. The office tower, located at 700 W. Broadway, is set to top out at 685,000 sf and will boast the most square feet of any office tower in the city's core.

The Irvine Co. has not revealed the cost of the property, but based on comparisons with other recent projects, it may surpass $300 million. Construction is set to begin in 2008 and should take two and a half years to complete.

The site design is inspired by the 1893 Monadnock building in Chicago and will feature architectural touches that tie in with the Santa Fe Depot next door.

"This site has great importance to the city because of its relationship to the bay and its prominent landmark location at the western entrance to downtown," Cobb says. "I believe that 700 West Broadway will be elegant, characterized by calm, timeless and classic architecture that will be fresh and functional in 100 years."

Plans call for the building to meet energy-efficiency standards set by the US Green Building Council
