New York City-based Rockefeller Group Development Corp. and Kimco Developers Inc., the developers of the 54-acre, $235-million Miramar Town Center, will begin building the two-story fitness center at the corner of Red and Hiatus roads in the next month. It is slated for completion early next year.

24 Hour Fitness director of real estate Bill Oughton described the town center as a strategic location for the company. "We believe we will receive tremendous support from the residents of Miramar as we expand our presence in South Florida through our Shaq Sport Clubs," Oughton says, in a prepared statement.

Construction on Miramar Town Center, located on Red Road between Pembroke Road and Miramar Parkway, began in April 2006. It will include 133 townhomes, 355 condominiums, 16 live/work units, 175,000 sf of retail and restaurants, more than 50,000 sf of office space and a mass transit hub. The entire complex is slated for completion in late 2009 or early 2010.

"The very nature of the town center is dependent upon having viable retail," says Rockefeller Group Development Corp. Florida office vice president and regional development officer Edgar Jones tells GlobeSt.com. "This is the first tenant signed for the project, but there will be others announced soon."

Professional basketball player Shaquille O'Neal has an agreement with 24 Hour Fitness to create 24 Hour Fitness Shaq Sport Clubs. The first one opened in Miami in 2005. The company also recently signed a 50,000-sf lease at the Catalina Centre shopping center located at 1703 North Congress Ave. in Boynton Beach to operate another club.
