KEARNY, NJ-The fictional Satriale's Pork Store, site of numerous meetings and "hits" during the Sopranos series on HBO, is no more. The vacant building was demolished recently, and is being replaced by a residential condo project.
Located at 101 Kearny Ave. here, the iconic building had been vacant for some time, used only as a set for the TV series. Owner Manny Costeira, a local businessman, had leased the vacant property for several years to HBO, which turned it into a storefront for the series.
"We whacked the pork store," says Costeira, who continues to sell individual bricks from the demolished building as souvenirs. He still needs to get final permits for his proposed nine-unit condo building, and hopes to have the project completed by the end of next year.
The name of his project? The Soprano, of course. Individual units range from $325,000 to $385,000, and Costeira says he has commitments for at least three of the units. The project is being built by Rex Properties and marketed by Metropolitan Real Estate, both of New York.
