What Mayor John McCormac wants to do with that stretch is bring in some high-end retail. "It is an area that needs to be redeveloped into more upscale retail and restaurants," says McCormac, in a statement. Prior to becoming mayor, McCormac was the New Jersey state treasurer from 2002 to 2006.
According to preliminary plans released by township officials, the stretch between Route 35 and this township's border with Rahway would be divided into 14 separate areas. Initial redevelopment efforts would begin with two parcels at the Route 35 intersection, and one at the intersection of Route 1 and Douglas Avenue. The township has also hired the consulting firm Heyer Gruel & Associates of New Brunswick to oversee the planning process.
