"This is part of a commitment to Houston and real commitment that we want to grow that office," Gulley tells GlobeSt.com. He says eight brokers, young and seasoned alike, were hired last year; the expectation is "at least that many, maybe more" will be added this year.
Gulley is marking his 30th year as a broker in Greater Houston and 20th year with Henry S. Miller. "Houston has changed dramatically from when I started in the business," he says. "The demographical change as an international city has been phenomenal."
Gulley was instrumental in restarting the Houston office in 1996, taking the reins in 2000 as its executive vice president. He explains the company entered the market in 1991, subsequently merged with another firm and then severed ties so it could once again solo.
"We have grown quite a bit since 2000. We have a good core of seasoned professionals," Gulley says. There were two industrial brokers added last year to the full-service shop and more will be hired this year, according to Gulley. "Houston is strong industrially and it's going to be stronger," he says, citing the expansion at the Port of Houston. "That's a place were we can do some good growth." Likewise, he plans to add more office and retail brokers, both sectors with strong sales and leasing volumes for the company.
Gulley says the decision to promote him after all these years is tied to the firm's plan to expand the local shop. "This last growth period, we've grown dramatically," he says. "The Miller name's good in Houston and the Miller company is committed to Houston."
