The new Annenberg Center for Information Science and Technology will be used for research and educational programs and is under way at the center of the Caltech campus, according to Heery project manager Bart Hale. The new Annenberg Center building will link information science and technology researchers in the adjacent Watson and Moore laboratories buildings through the creation of an "information quad." The site will help promote Caltech's vision for multidisciplinary cooperation within IST, which examines the impact of information as it relates to science and engineering practices.
Designed by Frederick Fisher and Partners, the three-story building includes an educational activity core surrounded by integrated faculty and graduate student offices, classrooms, studios and support areas. The majority of construction is being funded with a $25-million grant from the Annenberg Foundation. The LEED gold certification that the university is targeting exceeds the City of Pasadena's requirement for buildings of this size to pursue LEED silver certification.
The $31.2-million Annenberg Center building is part of a $100-million modernization program at Caltech. Heery International has been tapped to work with Caltech's team on the four additional projects across the campus that are part of that $100 million in project costs.
Heery is also working with the Caltech Design and Construction Department to manage the construction of facilities for astronomy and astrophysics, chemistry and chemical engineering, and nanoscience. The firm previously teamed with Caltech to manage the renovation of a 75-year-old historic residential facility.
