The development site is bordered by the 1.3-million-sf Shops at La Cantera, another USAA development that opened in 2005. It also is bordered by the La Cantera Town Square, situated at the junction of Interstate 10 and Loop 1604. USAA's first phase for the La Cantera expansion will be mid-rise, class A office buildings.

In a press release issued this morning, T. Patrick Duncan, president and CEO of the San Antonio-based USAA, says the development will be geared to complement the quality and architecture of the nearby Shops at La Cantera as well as blending in with the Hill Country surroundings. "We have designed the Town Center as a 24-hour, live/work/shop environment while preserving significant open spaces," he says. USAA could not be reached by deadline for additional comment on the development, which was unveiled yesterday to San Antonio media before being widely circulated on the wires.

The pedestrian-friendly development will extend eastward from the Shops at La Cantera through a series of wide streetscapes to feature wide sidewalks, retail store fronts and well-landscaped boulevards. The residential units will be parked above the retail. A new boulevard will link the Shops at La Cantera to Interstate 10. The plan includes a 25-acre park.

Just recently, USAA and General Properties Inc. of Chicago broke ground on the 300,000-sf second phase of the Shops at La Cantera. The expansion will bring another 40 stores, 40,000 sf of office and five restaurants.
