The project at 808 E. North Loop 1604 is the first one in Texas for Montex Real Estate of Monterrey, Mexico. Atlanta-based InterContinental will manage the hotel.
William Wurzbach, president of the project's general contracting firm FAS Construction Management of San Antonio, says Montex plans more hotels in Texas, but says the developer hasn't been specific about the location or the timeframe. He says Montex's first site is a high-growth area on the city's north side that is attracting a great deal of development interest. "There's been lots of residential growth there for years and retail is following the residential," he says. "There are good school districts in that area. You're also starting to get into the more scenic Hill Country, where people like to be."
Wurzbach tells GlobeSt.com that Montex made the decision to develop a more upscale Staybridge on the site because that's the company's MO. "This particular developer is interested any time there's an option from Staybridge to do moderate or high development and he chooses to do the higher end," he says.
The amenities and finish-out will be above the standard Staybridge hotel, according to Wurzbach. The developer's plans include paneled floors and walls. "That will provide a greater sound barrier between rooms and floors," Wurzbach says. "Also, the longevity of the structure is increased by using this type of construction." B&A Architects of San Antonio is designing the upgraded Staybridge.
