Built in 1986, the building sits on a parcel of nearly 3.5 acres. Cardinal renamed the building after acquiring it earlier this year for $27.5 milion.

Cardinal is renovating the building in three phases, with the first phase scheduled to be completed at the end of July and the last phase by September. The first phase will include new heating, ventilation, and cooling tower systems, a new elevator system, new monument and building signage, new exterior landscaping and fencing, improvements to the entrance and lobby, new interior features such as a conference room with video conferencing, and updates to restrooms, stairwells and other parts of the interior. The second and third phases will update restrooms on the first and third floors, work that has been staggered to accommodate tenants.

[IMGCAP(2)]Hacienda Del Mar's original adobe façade, Spanish architecture, and dome-topped tower make the building a historical neighborhood landmark. The building was first designed to resemble an 18th century Spanish hacienda, and was one the first office buildings in the Del Mar Heights area. The property has a 7,500-sf open-air courtyard with gardens and fountains, an outdoor café, an elevator, private balconies and operable wood windows.

Cardinal's renovations are designed to retain the original architectural design while adding new technology and environmentally friendly efficiencies. Cardinal is also introducing a concierge service, coffee bar, car detailing, messenger service, dry cleaning service, personnel and professional errand service, travel services, event and entertainment planning and other services for tenants.

Hacienda Del Mar is a replica of a building in Durango Mexico, except that the original was two stories and made of adobe while the San Diego building is three stories of wood and stucco. Its detail and architectural features include elaborate iron work, tile flooring and fountains.
