The property is at 676 Bielenberg Dr., at the east end of the Twin Cities area. The new property includes amenities such as 14-foot-tall entry ceilings, a WiFi-linked lobby, a club lounge, fitness center and modern rooms. The cost of development was not available, and hotel officials did not return calls in time for comment.
The hotel joins four other Sheraton-branded locations in the Twin Cities area. Starwood also has Westin and aloft-brand hotels in the Minneapolis Downtown. The new hotel is part of Starwood's plans, announced in April, to open 54 new Sheratons totaling about 20,000 rooms throughout North America by 2009. The company's goal is to open a hotel every 12 days under the $2-billion expansion plan.
Hotel companies have been seemingly untouched by the current economic crisis affecting all other property markets. New construction pipeline records have been set for the past few quarters, with new rooms totaling 125,442 during the first three months of 2008, according to Portsmouth, NH-based Lodging Econometrics.
