Swearingen executive vice president and managing partner Bruce Hecht says Tiller, who came from a 24-year stint at Grubb & Ellis Co. will boost the company's tenant representative side. Additionally, "Joe has experience in industrial, which is where we're trying to build our practice," Hecht says about Arata, the 20-year veteran who previously worked for Mohr Partners in Dallas. Representatives from Grubb & Ellis and Mohr Partners could not be reached for comment.

Hecht tells GlobeSt.com that Swearingen launched a hiring blitz in late 2007, bringing on eight new people in addition to Tiller and Arata partly because the Texas economy is doing better than other areas, and a good chunk of the company's business is in Texas. Furthermore, "we picked up some national accounts that are in a growing mode," Hecht adds. Because of those two factors, Swearingen saw steady revenues in 2008, laying the way for its personnel expansion.

The majority of the 2007-2008 hires were straight out of college, but Hecht notes that trend will likely slow in 2009. "I don't think we'll be bringing a whole lot of brand-new brokers straight out of college," he comments. "I'd like to see veterans who can work through a tougher economy."
