Washington Hospital Center will receive $10 million to increase its emergency care facility. United Medical Center is receiving $11 million to build a pediatric emergency department east of the Anacostia River through a partnership with Children's National Medical Center. Funding for this development is part of the $200 million made available to the city from a settlement with the tobacco industry.

The District has already allocated more than $100 million--including$79 million to rehabilitate the United Medical Center--formerly known as Greater Southeast Community Hospital. The Department of Health will make a second round of requests for applications for expansions of primary care facilities in 2009. There is still $45 million in grants funds available. The Mayor's office did not return inquiries by deadline.
